What we treat
Common conditions for which people see chiropractic help include…

The most typical type of lower back pain is what is called non-specific or mechanical lower back pain. This means it is typically arising from muscles and joints in the lower back, although sometimes there is no known cause. Most lower back pain resolves within a few days, with a combination of heat and gentle movement. However, persistent or repeated episodes of pain can really impact your ability to do the things you love, and that’s where we can help. Manual therapy (a combination of manipulation, mobilisation, soft tissue massage and exercises) has been shown to be very effective at both reducing low back pain symptoms and reducing the time taken to get back to full function. Typically a short course of 3-6 treatments is needed, but we will be able to advise more accurately once we’ve discussed your particular symptoms in person.

Often we’ve just slept awkwardly and this resolves in a day or so with some heat and movement. However, if neck pain persists, it can really become, well… a pain in the neck! Studies have shown that a combination of manual therapy and exercises can reduce pain and improve quality of life in people who have neck pain. We also understand that many people are nervous of manipulation in the neck. We don’t have to do this, in fact we can often relieve your neck pain without doing this. Nothing is going to happen to you that we don’t discuss first.

When pain travels down the leg, sometimes in combination with pins & needles or numbness, the cause can be irritation to the nerves which make up the sciatic nerve. Most of the time, an MRI is not needed to diagnose this. Management of these symptoms is aimed at reducing the symptoms in the leg and a package of care which includes manual therapy and exercises can be effective. We understand how frightening these symptoms can be, and we are experienced in helping people who are suffering with this. We work with you to get you out of pain and back to being able to do the things you love.

Nerve pain is really distinctive - and really uncomfortable! Sharp, shooting, electric shock, tingly or numb types of pain often indicate some type of nerve irritation or entrapment.
These problems are often treatable, but it’s really important to find out which nerve is the problem, and where it is being irritated.
A short course of treatment, along with some exercises is usually sufficient to get you back to doing the things you love.

We use a combination of treatments to reduce tension and pain in muscles which can be very effective in treating some types of headaches, including tension-type, cervicogenic and migraine. The inclusion of exercises in some cases can also have a positive impact on pain levels and quality of life.

Sometimes there has been an obvious injury, which we can help you manage and rehabilitate. Other times it’s a pain which seemingly appears from nowhere. In these cases, a thorough physical examination is often able to identify the reasons for your symptoms. There are lots of ways we treat shoulder pain and loss of function – often these are focussed on soft tissue release, but sometimes we use acupuncture, manipulation and/or mobilisation to the shoulder and surrounding areas to help reduce pain. However long-term return to function will involve exercises aimed at improving range of motion and strength in the shoulder and arm. We have an exercise area in the clinic where we can walk you through all the exercises you need to do, and any exercises we give you will be sent through to your email so you have them to revisit when you get home.

The good news is that these pains can often be improved by finding out the reason for the pain, and then treating with a combination of manual therapy and exercises. Our exercise area is perfect for walking you through the exercises, making sure you’re comfortable doing them and getting you back to the things you love. Any exercises we advise will be sent through to your email, so you can refer to it at home.

As someone who enjoys (!!) trundling around the odd triathlon, I understand how frustrating it can be when you pick up a niggle and it interrupts your training. It’s important to accurately diagnose the problem, including referring you for relevant scans if necessary, in order to be able to treat you most effectively and have you back in the game as quickly as possible!

Manipulation of both spinal and extremity joints has been shown to shorten the length of time you suffer with symptoms and reduce the likelihood of recurrence. We have a lot of different techniques to renew mobility to your joints and keep you moving.
But in reality, not everyone loves “the crack”! We also use gentle mobilisation techniques so we’re likely to find something that works for you.
-
Soft tissue massage is often an essential part of treating the root cause of your pain. I often employ a combination of massage along with manipulation and mobilisation to fully treat the cause of your symptoms in the shortest time frame.

I have been using acupuncture needles for 18 years. I find them a really useful addition to the techniques I use. They’re not for everyone, and that’s fine! But if you’re interested in finding out more, have a read of my blog post about how needles work, or feel free to ask me t your next appointment.

The way we live our daily lives invariably causes patterns of tightness in our bodies. Utilising stretching techniques as part of your overall treatment package if often really helpful.
Dont be surprised if I send you home with some stretches as homework - you have been warned….!

Drop piece technique is a useful alternative to lumbopelvic manipulation for some people who (for various reasons) do not like or cannot tolerate manipulation.
If you’ve had chiropractic treatment in the past, it may be familiar to you.
If you haven’t, I’ll talk you through everything before we use it, so nothing is a surprise to you!

For most of us, preventing a recurrence in your symptoms is likely to include some sort of strengthening and rehabilitative exercises.
I am well aware that none of us are suddenly likely to embark on a 2 hour long exercise programme on a daily basis, so I take a very pragmatic approach to prescribing exercises - 3 or 4 well chosen exercises is almost always sufficient to target the muscles which need to start working more effectively, and stop your symptoms recurring.
All exercises will be sent direct to your email, so you can refer to the videos at home and make sure you’re doing things right!
